Braves beat Padres 6-5 as Chris Sale strikes out 11

ATLANTA (AP) — Chris Sale matched a season-high with 11 strikeouts and the Atlanta Braves hit four home runs in a 6-5 win over the San Diego Padres on Thursday.

Dominic Smith hit a three-run homer and Michael Harris II and Ozzie Albies had solo blasts off bulk reliever Griffin Canning as the Braves took three of four from San Diego. All-Star Drake Baldwin added his 19th of the season in the seventh inning.

Sale (11-6) gave up three runs on five hits and a walk in six innings of work. All three runs came in the second inning.

Ty France hit a two-run homer in the eighth inning off Braves reliever Tyler Kinley to pull the Padres within one at 6-5. Danny Young came on for the Braves and recorded the third out of the eighth inning, then Raisel Iglesias threw a scoreless ninth to record his 21st save.

Canning (1-9) took over in the second inning after a perfect first from Padres opener Kyle Hart. Harris greeted him with a 420-foot home run to right field. Canning lasted 2 2/3 innings and gave up five runs, four earned as his ERA climbed to 6.97.

Harris was 2 for 4 with two runs scored and is now 6 for 7 in his career against Canning. Albies was 2 for 4 for the Braves, who have won six of eight.

TWINS 3, GUARDIANS 1, 12 INNINGS

CLEVELAND (AP) — Trevor Larnach and Luke Keaschall both delivered two-out RBI singles in the 12th inning, giving Minnesota a win over Cleveland and a split of their four-game series.

Larnach and Keaschall grounded their singles to left off Erik Sabrowski (3-2) as the Twins took the finale after being shut out for the first seven innings.

Cleveland starter Gavin Williams struck out 11 and was poised for his 11th win before the Twins rallied in the eighth.

Taylor Rogers (5-3) worked out of a jam in the 11th and rookie Jack Anderson pitched the 12th for his first save. Minnesota starter Taj Bradley and five relievers combined on a three-hitter.

Patrick Bailey homered for Cleveland.

BLUE JAYS 3, RAYS 1

TORONTO (AP) — Shane Bieber pitched a season-high seven innings to win his second straight start, George Springer reached base three times and drove in a run, and Toronto beat Tampa Bay to avoid a four-game sweep.

Bieber (2-1) allowed one run and three hits. He walked none and struck out three.

Tyler Rogers worked the eighth and Louis Varland finished for his 21st save in 21 opportunities.

Vladimir Guerrero Jr. had two singles and an RBI, and Springer went 2 for 3 with a walk as Toronto won for the second time in 10 meetings with the Rays.

The Blue Jays are 2-5 since the All-Star break, scoring just 13 runs.

Right-hander Casey Legumina opened for the Rays and allowed one run and two hits in two innings. Left-hander Ian Seymour (6-3) took over in the third and allowed two runs and five hits in six innings.

DIAMONDBACKS 10, CARDINALS 6

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Tyler Locklear went 3 for 4 with a homer and three RBIs, Brandon Pfaadt pitched six solid innings and Arizona beat St. Louis.

Arizona had 16 hits in the makeup of the teams’ June 25 rainout a day after having a season-high 17 hits at home against the Athletics.

Pfaadt (5-1) allowed two first-inning runs on four straight hits leading off the game but settled in to allow just three more hits. Arizona who has won three straight and nine of 11.

The Cardinals scored four two-out runs off Ryan Thompson in the ninth inning.

Locklear lined an RBI single up the middle off Matt Svanson in the eighth inning after hitting a two-run homer, his first of the season, off Michael McGreevy (4-8) in the fourth inning.

Arizona sent 11 batters to the plate in the eighth inning and scored five runs off Svanson and Justin Bruihl.

McGreevy (4-8) allowed four runs on seven hits in 6 1/3 innings for St. Louis. The Cardinals have lost 11 of 16.

TIGERS 4, ROYALS 3

DETROIT (AP) — James Outman hit a three-run homer in the seventh inning, Dillon Dingler had a tiebreaking double in the eighth and surging Detroit beat Kansas City.

The Tigers have won 14 of 19 games to potentially persuade the franchise to keep Tarik Skubal and make a push for the playoffs, instead of dealing the two-time Cy Young Award winner before the Aug. 3 trade deadline.

Drew Anderson (4-4) gave up one run in the eighth inning and Kyle Finnegan entered with two on and one out in the ninth and got out of the jam with a double play for his second save.

Kansas City’s John Schreiber was an out away from getting out of the seventh with a two-run lead, but Outman hit his 2-2 fastball just over the fence in right field to make it 3-2.

Josh Rojas pulled the Royals into a 3-all tie with an RBI single in the eighth inning. Dingler hit an RBI double off Steven Cruz (2-3) in the home half.

Isaac Collins broke a scoreless tie with a two-run homer in the sixth inning and Randy Dobnak threw five scoreless innings for the Royals.

Tiger starter Troy Melton allowed two runs, five hits and four walks over five innings.
