A bride’s biggest wedding-day performance had nothing to do with saying “I do”

Martrice Stevenson secretly swapped champagne for sparkling cider while convincing friends she was partying alongside them

The truth didn’t come out until months later, leaving loved ones stunned when they pieced the timeline together

When guests toasted the newlyweds with champagne, Martrice Stevenson quietly clinked glasses with sparkling cider. By the end of the night, everyone believed she’d been partying right alongside them.

In a viral TikTok video, the 30-year-old digital creator revealed she was eight weeks pregnant on her wedding day and had secretly spent the reception faking every drink.

“The only people who knew at the time were my soon-to-be husband, our wedding planner, and wedding photographer,” Stevenson tells PEOPLE. “We had just found out two weeks before the big day. Because it was still so early, we wanted to keep the news entirely to ourselves until we were absolutely sure everything was okay.”

Keeping the secret required far more planning than simply skipping a toast. Before the wedding, Stevenson confided in her planner, who immediately came up with a strategy after learning the bride’s favorite cocktail was a margarita.

“She asked what my favorite drink was — a margarita — and coordinated with the bartender to serve me alcohol-free virgins all night,” Stevenson says. Even the champagne tower featured sparkling cider in her glass, allowing her to blend in while guests celebrated around her.

The biggest scare came before the wedding had even begun. At the rehearsal dinner, a waitress unknowingly served Stevenson an alcoholic drink, forcing her to improvise on the spot before her friends caught on.

“I blamed it on wedding-day jitters, claiming my stomach was in knots and I couldn’t stomach alcohol,” she recalls. “My friends questioned me for a bit, but they eventually bought the excuse that I was just incredibly nervous. My maid of honor ended up drinking it for me!”

The secret became even harder to keep because her friends had spent months looking forward to celebrating together. As tempting as it was to simply tell them, Stevenson says keeping the news between herself and her husband made the moment feel even more meaningful.

“There were definitely moments where I thought it would be so much easier to just confess,” she says. “But at the same time, it felt sacred. I wanted to hold that beautiful secret as close to my husband and me for as long as we could before sharing it with the world.”

The couple waited until Stevenson reached the 12-week mark before announcing the pregnancy, and the realization quickly spread through family and friends that she’d already been expecting on her wedding day.

“When we broke the news, everyone’s jaws dropped,” Stevenson says. “They started doing the math and realized, ‘Wait, that means you were pregnant at the wedding!’ They couldn’t believe I had pulled off the performance of a lifetime. It’s a hilarious core memory for all of us now.”

Ironically, the morning after the wedding may have helped sell the performance even more. While guests recovered from a night of celebrating, Stevenson was dealing with something entirely different.

“Yes! The morning after, my first-trimester morning sickness hit me like a ton of bricks,” she says. “Luckily, everyone else was nursing a massive, actual hangover, so nobody batted an eye. It definitely wasn’t planned, but it worked out perfectly for the plot!”

If there was one part of her act that truly convinced her friends, it happened on the dance floor. Stevenson knew exactly which signature move everyone associated with her after a few drinks, so she leaned into it all night long.

“My friends all know that my ultimate ‘go-to’ drunk dance move is throwing one hand way up in the air while tearing up the dance floor,” she says with a laugh. “So, I just kept my hand in the air all night long. It totally worked—they loved it!”

Looking back, Stevenson says the secret ended up giving her an unexpected gift. Instead of remembering her wedding through a haze of champagne, she experienced every moment with complete clarity while quietly celebrating an even bigger milestone alongside her new husband.

“Being completely sober on my wedding day actually turned out to be incredibly special,” Stevenson says. “I was fully present, taking in every single moment without a buzz. It was a beautiful reminder that I don’t need alcohol to have the best time. Plus, it was so magical knowing that my husband and I already shared the ultimate wedding gift, just waiting for us nine months down the line.”
