Johnny Depp’s first words as Scrooge are already going viral. The first trailer for Ebenezer gives fans a look at the actor’s wild take on the classic Christmas character.

Paramount Pictures dropped the first trailer for Ebenezer at San Diego Comic-Con on Wednesday. The film stars Johnny Depp as Ebenezer Scrooge in a dark reimagining of Charles Dickens’ classic novella A Christmas Carol. Director Ti West helms the project, marking Depp’s first major Hollywood role since his 2022 defamation trial against ex-wife Amber Heard.

The trailer reveals Depp’s Scrooge tormented by terrifying spirits of Christmas throughout the holiday season. In between those supernatural encounters, the ill-tempered character spreads misery across the snow-covered streets. He is also seen throwing snowballs at the heads of unsuspecting passersby. “It’s good to be back,” Depp says as Scrooge at the end of the footage.

Depp also made a surprise in-character appearance at the convention before unveiling the trailer. He showed up at the “Ebenezer’s Office” activation and later appeared in Hall H at the Collider Directors on Directing panel. The move signals a significant vote of confidence from Paramount in the actor’s box office appeal.

The film follows Depp’s departure from the Fantastic Beasts franchise in 2018. Warner Bros. replaced him with Mads Mikkelsen as the villain Grindelwald in The Secrets of Dumbledore. Depp had since appeared in international projects like Minamata and Jeanne du Barry. He also directed the indie film Modi, Three Days on the Wing of Madness during that period.

Ebenezer features a stacked ensemble cast alongside Depp. Ian McKellen plays Jacob Marley, while Andrea Riseborough portrays the Ghost of Christmas Past. Tramell Tillman takes on the Ghost of Christmas Present, and Daisy Ridley plays the Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come.

Rupert Grint, Sam Claflin, Arthur Conti, and Ellie Bamber round out the supporting cast. Nathaniel Halpern wrote the screenplay adaptation for the film. West previously gained recognition for his work on horror films like Pearl and MaXXXine. He told audiences at CinemaCon that certain A Christmas Carol adaptations were among his earliest exposures to the horror genre.

Ebenezer arrives in theaters on Nov. 13.
