TW: Rape. This article contains spoilers for Netflix's A Toxic Love Story.

Netflix has released its latest true crime offering, and it's truly one to watch for documentary fans.

A Toxic Love Story dropped on Netflix on July 22, and it's already gotten people talking. The feature-length documentary film covers a shocking love triangle, which ends in prison sentences for two of those involved.

During the film, viewers are introduced to Michelle Hadley, her ex-fiancé Ian Diaz, and his new wife, Angela Diaz. This documentary comes as the streaming giant has found huge success with its penultimate factual offering, Shipwrecked: Nightmare at Sea, which delves into the horrific 2012 Costa Concordia tragedy.

A Toxic Love Story opens with Angela Diaz claiming she'd been attacked in her home, with viewers quickly learning how she'd been receiving dark emails from an anonymous person called Lilith.

This person, who Angela and her husband Ian claim is his ex-fiancée Michelle, orchestrates a horrific online campaign during which they contact men on Craigslist pretending to be Angela, saying she's interested in rape fantasy.

The "fake" Angela then says how she wants to be grabbed and had sex with forcefully, and if she says "no," to continue. One man even told Netflix how he arrived at the house for the sexual experience, but that he turned away when he felt something about the situation wasn't right.

Angela and US Marshall Ian give this information to the police, and after the former is attacked, Michelle is arrested and taken to jail. However, the story isn't as simple as that because it turns out Angela is the one sending the emails in the first place, and that she has been contacting the men on Craigslist.

Michelle is soon released from jail, where she'd spent 88 days, after digital investigators traced the IP addresses and VPNs back to Angela's phone and condo.

Angela was arrested, pleaded guilty in October 2017 to kidnapping and filing false reports, and was sentenced to five years in prison. And that may seem like the end, but of course not; there's another twist.

Angela's husband Ian seemed shocked at first by the revelation, but a Department of Justice investigator felt something was amiss and looked into Ian due to his role as a US Marshall.

During this investigation, he spoke to Michelle, who revealed the abuse she'd faced at Ian's hands, and his story soon unravelled. Michelle detailed how her relationship with Ian was allegedly emotionally abusive, controlling, and a "daily roller coaster ride" involving extreme financial surveillance and forced sexual fantasies.

Michelle also disclosed that alleged intense psychological abuse led to a severe PTSD-induced dissociative episode, causing her to draft initial angry emails referencing Lilith that would later be weaponized to frame her for cyberstalking to keep their shared condo.

It would be revealed that Ian and Angela used the previous emails to continue with this Lilith character and frame Michelle. And the reason for this whole charade was so that Angela and Ian could keep the apartment he had once shared with Michelle.

Investigators would find fragments of the "Lilithistruth" email on Ian's official government laptop. In March 2023, a federal jury convicted Ian of conspiracy, cyberstalking, perjury, and obstruction. He was sentenced to 10 years and one month in prison.

Netflix fans will be happy to know that Michelle had her fairytale ending, giving birth to her first child on the day Ian was convicted. She has also finished her MBA and was fully exonerated.

A Toxic Love Story is available to watch on Netflix now.
