Peter Alexander is saying goodbye to his “NBC family” after 22 years.
On Saturday, March 28, the Saturday Today host, 49, announced live on air that he would be leaving the network to “challenge himself with something new” and spend more time with his wife, Alison Starling, and their two daughters: Ava, 12, and Emma, 10.
“I’ve been away from home more than 80 nights in the last seven months, more than 200 Friday nights away from my family in the last seven years,” Alexander said. “So, in this limited window before my daughters lose interest in hanging out with me — it’s already happened quick — I’m eager to carve out a better balance between my personal and professional lives and to challenge myself with something new.”
Alexander joined NBC News in 2004, covering a range of stories around the world, before he was named a White House correspondent in 2012.

After joining Saturday Today in October 2021, Alexander was named NBC’s co-chief White House correspondent alongside Kristen Welker.
The two went on to host Saturday Today from 2020 to 2023, until Welker succeeded Chuck Todd as moderator of Meet the Press.
“It’s hard to believe, but I have been part of the NBC family for longer than I’ve had my own family,” Alexander emphasized on the March 28 broadcast. “Studio 1A, being right here with his team and with all the folks you don’t see on TV, this is literally my happy place."

Alexander has co-hosted the weekend program alongside Laura Jarrett, who joined NBC as a senior legal correspondent in January 2023.
“Peter, we love you, we are going to miss you,” Jarrett, 42, said to Alexander after he announced his departure.
“You are a brilliant journalist. You are a good and decent man, and you are an extraordinary father," she added.

“You only get one shot to be Ava and Emma’s dad,” Jarrett continued. ”200 nights is a long time. They are lucky to have you as their father.”
