For his next project, Tarantino has elected to bypass making his final movie in favor of the stage play The Popinjay Cavalier, which plans to open in London’s West End in spring 2027. According to Deadline, the “swashbuckling comedy” will be headlined by Sacha Baron Cohen, who will play the title character. The project marks Cohen’s stage debut.
The decision to cast Cohen has drawn online criticism, unsurprisingly because of the actor’s previous projects and political views. Tarantino has never backed away from controversy. In fact, he’s embraced it throughout his entire career. A divisive project from Tarantino needs someone who can handle the vitriol that might come with it. Cohen, a fearless performer unafraid of blowback, is the ideal actor to perform this role.

Robert Forster was a character actor searching for a big break when Tarantino cast him in Jackie Brown, leading to an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor.

Leonardo DiCaprio as the villain in Django Unchained and Daryl Hannah in Kill Bill are other examples of Tarantino’s unconventional casting that worked. If Tarantino casts Cohen, then it shows he believes that the actor is the right person for the job, and the audience should trust that decision.

As for his acting, The Popinjay Cavalier suits Cohen’s talents. The play is described as “rambunctious comedy of deception and disguise.” Cohen has built his career on rambunctious characters like Borat, Ali G, and Brüno. The West End show plays to Cohen’s strengths, which should be elevated by Tarantino’s dialogue and style.
Cohen should be the latest example of why not to bet against Tarantino’s casting decision.
