Itās a whimsical winter wonderland at Jonathan Scott and Zooey Deschanelās house!
PEOPLE got an exclusive look at the engaged coupleās maximalist Christmas decorations that are decking the halls of their Los Angeles family home. The Merv actress, 45, and the Property Brothers host, 47, teamed up with Glitterville Studios creator and designer Stephen Brown to bring their out-of-the-box holiday decor vision to life.
As in previous years, the couple went the unconventional route with "joyful characters, vibrant colors and no shortage of shimmer" on display throughout their home, Scott tells PEOPLE.
"I love a magical sense of whimsy for the holidays and with an 8 and 10-year-old⦠color and creativity is key," he says, referring to Deschanel's children, daughter Elsie Otter, 10, and son Charlie Wolf, 8. "We wanted something that felt like stepping into a holiday cartoon dream."

There is not a traditional Christmas tree in sight either, as each evergreen overflows with colorful ribbon and playful ornaments.
Scott says they decorated their tree in the living room "a little differently this year" after speaking with Brown about winter traditions: "Skiing came up, so youāll see a super cute chalet motif," he notes of the evergreen's theme.
The process of bringing each vibrant tree to life is detailed in the house tour above, during which Scott can't hide his excitement over seeing all the "characters" Brown added to the tree ā including the "giant house" at the bottom.

For his part, Brown tells PEOPLE that while the couple stayed true to their favorite tree accessories ā like "brightly colored balls, a myriad of lights, garlands and of course lots of tinsel" ā the pair wanted to include "a little something to make it different than in previous years."
"For that, we added lots of swallow-tailed ribbons for an extra pop of color⦠underneath all the tinsel which is Zooeyās absolute favorite!" Brown says.

Echoing that sentiment, Scott notes that while they mostly kept the candy-colored palette the same this year, they really "leaned into ribbon and bows" to change it up a bit.
Brown has a good grasp of the couple's holiday decorating style after working with them over the last few seasons. They first connected in 2022 for HGTV's White House Christmas special, which the couple hosted together alongside former first lady Jill Biden. Scott and his twin brother Drew's new brand management agency, BrandJourney, also now manages the Glitterville brand as a client.

Describing the overall theme of Jonathan and Deschanelās magical abode this year, Brown explains: "Zooey loves color, nostalgia and a bit of kitsch! Combine her favorites with Jonathanās childlike excitement for the holidays and I donāt think anyone would ever disagree that together, they create a truly magical holiday home."
While the couple has been sticking to their maximalist theme, Jonathan tells PEOPLE he wasn't always drawn to such over-the-top decor. "Growing up, I always leaned into a more traditional Christmas with the gold and silver metallic, and the greens and reds," he explains.

He notes that he and Deschanel "agree on most" of the decor in their abode, however the kids are always their first priority when it comes to the decorations.
"Everything we do, we do for the kids. And the kids love the holidays. So that was our main inspiration for taking the whimsy to the next level," he shares, adding that Elsie and Charlie have their own trees they love to decorate in the playroom.

"When you walk in our home over the holidays, you canāt help but smile," he says.

Earlier this year, Jonathan revealed to PEOPLE just how much effort goes into their "Christmas changeover" each year, noting the entire process can take almost a week to complete.
āI start on the inside because it takes about five or six days for us to do the whole inside,ā he previously told PEOPLE. āAnd then what we do is we wait until actual Thanksgiving has passed and then we change the outdoor decor, so along the street and stuff like that.ā
