An ordinary summer night took a tragic turn on July 16, 1999, when John F. Kennedy Jr., his wife Carolyn Bessette, and her sister Lauren Bessette died in a devastating plane crash. More than two decades later, their story continues to captivate the world.
The crash was recently brought to life on the finale of FX's *Love Story*, which revisits JFK Jr. and Carolyn's marriage and the public's enduring fascination with them. It also examines a loss that shocked their families family, friends, and the nation.
In the days that followed the incident, those closest to JFK Jr., Carolyn, and Lauren gathered to honor them through a series of memorials. Here's a closer look at their services.

Ted Kennedy; Bill Clinton.
The deaths of JFK Jr. and the Bessette sisters promoted an outpouring of grief from family, friends, and major figures.
Senator Ted Kennedy expressed his family's heartbreak in a statement at the time: "We are filled with unspeakable grief and sadness by the loss of John and Carolyn and Lauren Bessette. John was a shining light in all our lives and in the lives of the nation and the world that first came to know him as a little boy."
Carolyn and Lauren's parents, William J. Bessette and Ann Messina Freeman, along with their stepfather Richard Freeman, remembered the three as "the embodiment of love, accomplishment and passion for life." They said that JFK Jr. and Carolyn "were true soulmates," and they took "solace in the thought that together they will comfort Lauren for eternity."

Then-President Bill Clinton reflected on his personal connection (via CNN) to the family, noting how JFK Jr., Carolyn, and his sister Caroline Kennedy "were uncommonly kind to my daughter and to my wife."
He added, "This has been a very difficult thing for us personally."
Former president George H.W. Bush and his wife Barbara also expressed their sorrow. "John was a man of enormous promise and of great character," he said, per CNN. "Like all Americans, Barbara and I, and the entire Bush family, mourn their passing."**

Funeral plans for JFK Jr., Carolyn, and Lauren weren't straightforward, as there were reportedly lots of different ideas.
According to Elizabeth Beller's 2024 book *Once Upon a Time: The Captivating Life of Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy*, Sen. Ted Kennedy favored a large, public service at St. Patrick's Cathedral in New York City, while Caroline preferred the quieter St. Thomas More, hoping it would provide privacy and a sense of calm for the families.
At one point, the Kennedy and Bessette families even met to discuss arrangements. It was suggested that JFK Jr. and Carolyn be buried together in the Kennedy family plot in Brookline, Mass., per Beller's book. But Carolyn and Lauren's mother, Ann, didn't want her daughters separated, so the families ultimately decided on a burial at sea for all three.
On July 22, their ashes were scattered in a ceremony aboard the U.S. Navy destroyer USS *Briscoe*. Navy chaplain Louis Iasiello recounted the burial in the 2024 book *JFK Jr.: An Intimate Oral Biography* by RoseMarie Terenzio and Liz McNeil, recalling how Ted moved quietly "from family member to family member, a fatherly figure ministering to the family."
Fellow chaplain William Petruska said only 17 members of the Kennedy, Bessette, and Freeman families were there, and even among the Kennedys, he only recognized a few: Ted, Caroline and her husband Ed, William Kennedy Smith, Bobby Kennedy, and Maria Shriver.
Barry C. Black, another Navy chaplain, carried the urns with JFK Jr. and Carolyn's ashes, while a Roman Catholic priest carried Lauren's. Black recalled, "I've officiated at over a hundred funerals — I know grief. I have not seen such palpable grief anywhere else in my life."
When it came time to scatter the ashes, the families did so from a steep ladder at the rear of the ship, guided by the chaplains for safety.
The families also held a private funeral for JFK Jr. and Carolyn

On July 23, the day after the burial at sea, JFK Jr. and Carolyn were honored with a private funeral at St. Thomas More Church in New York City. Terenzio revealed in her book that the small church could only fit 350 people, but everyone important to JFK Jr. — including all 40 of his *George *colleagues — was invited. "Those were John's people," she wrote.
Among the high-profile attendees were President Clinton, who had "done so much to help find them," as well as legendary boxer Muhammad Ali and NFL player Rosey Grier.
The Bessette family and their friends were also present, though Beller wrote in her book that "only a small number were invited, and there still wasn't enough room for them all."
She also shared that streets around the church were closed, and mourners had to show their invites to get through, then walk 17 blocks in the heat "past hundreds of onlookers lining the blocks."
As recounted in *JFK Jr: An Intimate Oral Biography*, Ted's eulogy was deeply moving. He remembered his nephew as a "serious man who brightened our lives with his smile and his grace."
"He was still becoming the person he would be, and doing it by the beat of his own drummer," the senator continued. "He had only just begun. There was in him a great promise of things to come."
Ted also spoke about Carolyn and Lauren, calling them "extraordinary women of high accomplishment — and their own limitless possibilities."
After the service, the memorial continued with a reception at the Convent of the Sacred Heart school, according to Beller. Later, friends and family gathered at McSorley's Old Ale House, and eventually moved to a friend's apartment because no one was quite ready to say goodbye.

On July 24, a memorial for Carolyn, Lauren, and JFK Jr. took place at Christ Church in Greenwich, Conn. Beller wrote in *Once Upon a Time *that many who knew the Bessette sisters came to pay their respects, some kneeling outside the church in a quiet prayer.
''I remember her as an eclectic and fun person, said David Dall, one of Lauren's high school classmates, per the *New York Times*. "She was friends with everyone."
Theo A. Constantine, another high school classmate, added, ''As a community we need to show our support. The Kennedys have more than enough support and Carolyn was recognized through them. The focus hasn't been equal and this is a nice way to remember Lauren as an individual.''
Beller mentioned that the service's 14 ushers included Terenzio, Mary Richardson Kennedy, and Calvin Klein's daughter Marci Klein. The 18 honorary pallbearers included Bobby Kennedy Jr., Anthony and Carole Radziwiłł, and Bobby, Tim, and Maria Shriver. Ted and Caroline also attended, honoring Ann's wish for a service that was "to be dignified and quiet, and to reflect the two daughters in a spiritual way."
All the Bessettes, Messinas, and Freemans were there. Ann's brother, Jack Messina, recalled happy memories of Lauren, "reminiscing fondly about Lauren playing putt-putt in the backyard in high heels and pajamas."
Carole read from Henry James' *The Portrait of a Lady* in honor of Carolyn, later describing her "wild and vivid in a cautious and pale world. Always burning a little more brightly than any of us around her. … I will miss her for eternity."
